What Paint Correction Actually Is
Paint correction is the process of permanently removing paint defects — swirl marks, scratches, oxidation, water spots, and etching — by leveling the clear coat surface through controlled abrasion. Unlike waxes and polishes that fill defects temporarily, correction actually removes the damaged clear coat layer, leaving a flatter, more reflective surface.
Types of Paint Defects
Swirl Marks
Those circular scratches visible in direct sunlight are usually caused by improper washing technique — automatic car wash brushes, dirty cloths, or circular wiping motions. They're the most common defect and the easiest to correct.
Light Scratches
Surface scratches that you can't feel with your fingernail are typically in the clear coat only and can be corrected. Scratches you can feel have likely penetrated to the basecoat and may require touch-up paint.
Oxidation
The dull, chalky appearance on older paint is UV damage to the clear coat. Correction can remove oxidized layers and restore gloss, but severely oxidized paint may have insufficient clear coat remaining for safe correction.
Water Spots and Etching
Hard water deposits and bird droppings can leave permanent marks. Light etching can be corrected; deep etching may require wet sanding by a specialist.
The Correction Process
Single-Stage Correction
One pass with a medium-cut polish removes light to moderate defects. Results: 50-70% defect removal. Cost: $200-$400.
Multi-Stage Correction
Multiple passes with progressively finer compounds for maximum defect removal. Results: 85-95% defect removal. Cost: $400-$800+.
Wet Sanding
For severe defects, wet sanding levels the surface before polishing. This removes more clear coat and should only be performed by experienced professionals.
After Correction: Protection Is Essential
Freshly corrected paint is vulnerable. Without protection, defects will return within months. Ceramic coating after correction provides years of protection and maximizes the investment. At minimum, a quality sealant should be applied immediately after correction.
